The first state of the plate is darker than I had intended (not quite as dark as the photo) but I liked the moody image it produced. After printing an edition of 10, I sanded the plate and began to re-work it as a drypoint. I'm not finished working on the plate, but I thought I'd post a picture of it now since I don't know when I will get to a print making studio again. The Santa Fe etching club/Argos Gallery/Eli Levin Studio are my favorite trinity of intaglio printmaking. Will I find something in Montana to stand in for them? Time will tell.

Well, I just showed you "self" and now I give you "shelf" (which is also pretty autobiographical). Please excuse the waviness of the linen! I taped it to the board as best I could, but didn't manage to make it totally flat (and kept, somewhat comically, trying to correct for that in the study). I think this will be a larger painting, but it might take a while before you see that here...

This was kind of quick, and is my first "real" self portrait (I have painted my reflection in still life objects). It felt flat -- working from a mirror is very strange when one is used to working from something or someone situated in space. This was, on the whole, a very confusing activity which I hope to repeat with more success in the future!

Above: Adam, final state in various colors. I have been playing with Chine-collé, which is a method of gluing together two pieces of paper (a fine, tissue-like one on top of a sturdier support) while making an intaglio print. Still struggling to get it right, but these are some of my results so far!

And here are some others... failed Chine-collé! They pealed right off the support due to different paper shrinkage rates, improper gluing, too much size on the paper, etc. Anyway, they look nice in my studio window at the moment, and I will give most of them to my friend and fellow artist Trevor Burrowes so that he can turn them into recycled paper art.

For those of you who know Eliza, I am sure you realize this looks nothing like her! Still, I am happy with it, since I sketched on the plate from life (which includes a very minimal ability to mask out mistakes). So for a drawing with very little "erasing" this feels pretty OK. More soon.

States of Adam (in progress)

I, Adam, first state in black ink, by K. Schoening. This was the transfer of an early line drawing of Adam, made into a line etching.

II, Adam, second state in black ink. Here I applied aquatint (sort of badly, but still...) to the plate.

III, Adam, third state in sepia ink. At this point I used my final figure drawing as a reference and tried to start burnishing back the aquatint to create form.

IV, Adam, fourth state in sepia ink. I tried to refine the modeling a bit in this state, without pushing it too far. I have at least one more session of burnishing to bring things up to the top of the light in places, and then I might go back in and etch some more lines. Not sure what to do with this one yet! Just getting used to the medium.

This is an attempt to rid my palette of tube colors containing zinc white. I recently saw an early 20th century painting in which the sky (which had a lot of zinc in it) flaked off the ground entirely. Yikes! Having stripped my palette of many mixed tube colors, I will now admit, for Tom's gratification, that a neutral gray would be extremely helpful-- especially for quick studies.

I promise I am painting, though what I am going to share with you today is an example of the culinary arts (painting-wise, I am working on a four week pose, so it will take a while for that update!) This morning I baked madeleines, with my new madeleine pan (acquired in Angers over the weekend). I had the idea of using it in still life, but I couldn't resist trying it out.

I got the recipe from David Lebovitz's blog. After baking these little lemony delights, I can state with certainty that David Lebovitz is a wonderful man!

Below is the result of my first ever attempt at etching! The image is a quick sketch I did directly on a copper plate coated with a hard ground. As you can see from the backwards initials on the first proof, one of the first things I learned was how to burnish out errors. After a fun afternoon of learning about etching at Eli Levin's studio, I had the chance to look at some of my favorite etchings EVER -- a selection of Goya's Caprichos and Desastres de la Guerra -- thanks to Dr Bob Bell.

Sangre de Cristo Cloud Sketch

I tried to contain my cloud sketch this afternoon within a cloudscape, rather than doing lots of little cloud fragments (which I am more comfortable with, and feel that I can handle more subtly). Relating the fragments of cloud to each other to build a convincing cloudscape is extremely difficult! Clouds are quick things, and I am afraid that I didn't entirely succeed in producing a coherent picture with this one... not sure. I plan to keep practicing, and to read more about cloud types, what they mean, and how they behave. If I know what the cloud is up to, then I might be able to create larger cloud compositions in a more meaningful, natural way.

So this weekend some of us (Josh, Debrorah, Colt, John) sat on the porch at the gallery and painted Randy. Below is the result of my efforts. It was fun to meet people coming into and out of the gallery, and hearing their comments on the show. Everyone was very impressed with Randy's ability to sit perfectly still, to the extent that some passers by wondered, out loud, "is that a real guy?"

Current and former members of the Ryder Studio community will be exhibiting works at Canyon Road Contemporary Art over Memorial Day weekend. Some of the artists exhibiting (who happen to have websites you might want to visit) include Tony Ryder, Anna Wakitsch, Deborah Allison, Seree Bayne, Toby Hall, Cathy Lucas, Colt Prehm, John Reger, and JoAnne Tucker, and more (Mercia, you need a blog!). I have lots of things that will be in the building and available for sale (though not necessarily all hanging on the walls... we are a lot of people for the space). From quick flower sketches to torso studies, there will be something for everyone! Or, if you happen to be in Deux-Sèvres, you could attend the (first annual?) Salon d'Argenton-Chateau! Tim Stotz and Michelle Tully, of Studio Escalier, have organized an exhibition there of student and faculty work from their Winter at the Louvre class.
